Sweet cornbread is one of those sides that instantly makes dinner feel a little more special. Around here, it usually shows up next to a pot of chili or a with my slow cooker bean recipe.

I know traditional Southern savory cornbread skips the sugar, and I love that version too. But this sweet cornbread has its own place at the table. It's soft, just a little rich, and has that hint of sweetness that pairs so well with savory, comforting meals. My family members especially love this perfect cornbread because it adds that classic sweet bite that balances everything out, it's truly the best cornbread recipe. You can make it even sweeter with a drizzle of honey before serving.

    Why this Recipe Works

    • It's soft and tender with just enough crumb, but still sturdy enough to hold up next to a bowl of chili or beans.
    • It has a sweet flavor without turning into cake-like cornbread.
    • It's also really simple. No complicated steps, no weird ingredients.

    Ingredients You'll Need

wet and dry ingredients for cornbread in different bowls

Yellow Cornmeal- This is where all the flavor comes from. It gives you that classic cornbread texture with just a little grit.

All Purpose Flour - Balances the cornmeal and keeps the texture soft instead of too crumbly.

Brown Sugar - Adds a deeper, slightly caramel-like sweetness that makes this version feel a little more complex than using white sugar.

Baking Powder - Helps the cornbread rise so it stays light and fluffy instead of dense.

Salt - Balances the sweetness and brings out the natural corn flavor.

Buttermilk- Adds moisture and a slight tang that keeps the sweetness from feeling too heavy. Be sure to use whole fat buttermilk for the best flavor. You can use whole milk if you don't have buttermilk on hand.

Large Eggs- Give the cornbread structure and help hold everything together.

Oil - Keeps the cornbread extra moist and tender. You don't have to be fancy here, just use a neutral vegetable oil.

Canned Creamed Corn - The secret ingredient. Adds moisture, a little natural sweetness, and soft bits of corn throughout for the most moist cornbread.

Melted Butter - coat the pan to keep from sticking

    Instructions

To make this homemade cornbread recipe, preheat your oven to 375°F and grease a baking dish (or cast iron skillet for extra crispy edges) with the melted butter.

In a large bowl, whisk together the cornmeal, flour, sugar, baking powder, and salt. In a separate bowl, mix the buttermilk, egg, oil, and creamed corn.

Pour the wet ingredients into the dry ingredients and stir until just combined. Don't over mix here for the best results. A few lumps are totally fine. Pour the cornbread batter into your prepared dish or hot skillet and smooth the top.

Bake for about 30 - 35 minutes, or until the top is golden and a toothpick comes out clean. Let it cool slightly before slicing. Or don't. Warm cornbread is hard to resist.

    Storage & Freezing

Store leftover cornbread in an airtight container at room temperature for up to 2 days. You can freeze this cornbread after its completely cooled. Sometimes I'll make cornbread muffins to freeze since it's easier to pull one out at a time. It's the same recipe, just grease a muffin tin instead of using a skillet.

    What to Serve With It

My favorite thing to serve cornbread with is a bowl of brothy beans. It also is yummy with a bowl of homemade chili, a side to bring to a potluck, serve with some bbq chicken or pork.

    Frequently Asked Questions

    Is this cornbread really sweet?

It's sweet, but not dessert-level. Think classic Southern sweet cornbread, not cake.

Can I make this in a cast iron skillet?

Yes, if you have one. It gives the best crispy edges.

Can I make it ahead of time?

Absolutely. Just reheat it in the oven so it softens back up.
