After years of at home taco nights, I've narrowed down what I think is the best ground beef taco meat recipe. It is a staple since it can be used in so many ways such as tacos with soft tortillas, crispy shells, nachos, enchiladas, or lettuce wraps.

Make a double batch and freeze some for a easy weeknight shortcut. Here is the ultimate ground beef taco meat recipe that will take your taco game to the next level!

    Ingredients

Each ingredient in this recipe plays a crucial role in creating a well-balanced and flavorful homemade taco meat.

Ingredients for this recipe: ground beef, onions, fresh garlic, spices and tomato paste

    For the taco meat

Ground beef (80% lean, 20% fat for the best flavor) - I like 80/20 ground beef because it ensures a juicy and flavorful meat mixture without being too greasy. If you want to use lean ground beef, you may need to add a little oil to your skillet.

Onion & Garlic - Freshly chopped onion and garlic provide depth of flavor and aroma, enhancing the beef's taste.

Homemade Taco Seasoning - Chili powder, paprika, cumin, oregano and red pepper flakes create the signature bold, smoky, and slightly spicy taco seasoning.

Salt and freshly ground black pepper - Coarse Kosher salt is used in all my recipes and enhances the flavor of the beef as well as ground black pepper.

Tomato paste - The acid in the tomato paste bring balance to the rich, fatty beef.

Water or Broth - Helps distribute the flavors and keep the meat moist.

Apple cider vinegar or lime juice (for a tangy kick) - Brightens the dish with a touch of acidity, balancing the richness of the beef.

Optional - diced tomatoes or canned green chilies - Adds extra texture and a mild tangy-sweet flavor.

    Instructions

Heat a large skillet over medium heat. If your ground beef is lean, add olive oil to prevent sticking. Add the ground beef to the skillet. Cook, breaking it apart with a wooden spoon, until it's browned and no longer pink, about 5-7 minutes. Drain any excess grease if necessary.

Stir in the chopped onion and minced garlic. Cook for another 2-3 minutes, until the onion softens and becomes translucent. Sprinkle the chili powder, cumin, smoked paprika, oregano, onion powder, garlic powder, and crushed red pepper flakes over the beef mixture. Stir well to coat the beef evenly with the spices.

Stir in the tomato paste, ensuring it evenly coats the beef. Pour in the broth or water and mix well. Let it simmer for 5 minutes, allowing the liquid to reduce slightly and the flavors to meld together.

Stir in the apple cider vinegar or lime juice for a tangy finish. Taste the taco meat and adjust the seasoning with additional salt or pepper if needed.
