When the summer sun's out and the grill is hot, nothing brings people together like the smell of sizzling juicy steak. Grilled sirloin steaks are a good option if you are craving a nice steak that's also affordable.

medium rare grilled sirloin steaks this Recipe!

For backyard cookouts weeknight dinners or easy meal prep this grilled sirloin recipe is simple satisfying and family approved. Use your gas grill, charcoal grill or even a grill pan indoors (as seen in my photos) for this recipe.

Sirloin is a great cut for families. It's:

    • Affordable - Compared to ribeye, New York strip or filet mignon, sirloin is usually half the cost.
    • Lean but flavorful - Less fat, but still juicy when cooked right.
    • Versatile - Great for steak dinners, tacos, salads, or sandwiches.

I'll be honest, since sirloins are lean, they can get a little dry or tough. I like to serve them with some flavor enhancers like a yummy compound butter like my Roasted Garlic Butter or accompany it with a flavorful sauce like a Creamy Gorgonzola Sauce. You can also enhance the flavor by marinating the sirloin before you grill them. I love this easy 3-Ingredient Steak Marinade since I usually have all the ingredients in the pantry. This recipe would also work on different cuts of beef including flank steak, ribeye steak, porterhouses or t-bones.

Pro tip: Look for top sirloin if you can. It's the most tender part and still budget-friendly.

two raw sirloin steak prepped on a plate

    Ingredients

    • 2 - 4 sirloin steaks about 1 to 1.5 pounds total
    • 2 tablespoons olive oil
    • 2 teaspoons kosher salt
    • 1 tablespoon butter for finishing
    • Fresh parsley optional garnish

    Instructions

Pat steaks dry and coat with olive oil. Rub salt all over the steaks. If you think of it, salt the steak the night before, creating a dry brine, for the best flavor. Let sit at room temperature for 30 minutes to promote even cooking.

kosher salt sprinkled all over steak

Preheat grill to high heat 450 f to 500 f. Clean and oil grill grates to prevent sticking. If using a grill pan indoors, heat the pan to medium high heat and add some oil to prevent sticking. Grill steaks for 3 to 4 minutes per side for medium rare or a little longer for medium. The thickness of your steak will determine the amount of cooking time it takes. Use a instant-read thermometer to get the right temperature.

Sirloins will get a bit tough if you cook them to medium well, so I would avoid overcooking them.

    • Medium-rare steak: 130 f to 135 f degrees internal temperature
    • Medium steak: 140 f to 145 f degrees internal temperature

Transfer steaks to a cutting board or plate, top with butter and loosely tent with foil. Let the steak rest for 5 to 10 minutes to seal in juices.

Serve the top sirloin steak as is, or slice them on a wood cutting board before serving for easy eating. Finish with a pat of butter, black pepper, or a yummy steak sauce.

    • Yukon Gold Mashed Potatoes

    • Cheesy Grits
    • Classic House Salad

Top tips for the perfect steak

    • Let steak sit out for 20-30 minutes before cooking so it cooks evenly
    • Kosher salt or sea salt enhances natural flavors. Season well on both sides before cooking. If you have time, salt the steaks overnight for the best flavor
    • Moisture on the surface can steam the steak instead of searing it. Use paper towels to dry it before seasoning
    • Rest steak 5-10 minutes after cooking
