Easy Homemade Tartar Sauce is so worth making instead of using the bottled stuff. Serve this alongside Homemade Crab Cakes, fried fish, fried shrimp and more!

How do you make tartar sauce from scratch?

Simple. Just chop up some red onion, chives (or green onion), capers and dill pickles.

Then mix them all together with your favorite mayonnaise (our favorite is Duke’s), a little pickle juice and some black pepper!

How long does homemade tartar sauce last?

This recipe will last up to a week in the fridge if it even lasts that long before you use it up!

Can you make this recipe vegan?

Yes! You can make this tartar sauce vegan by substituting your favorite vegan mayonnaise! My mom is highly allergic to eggs so she modifies this recipe by using her favorite Grapeseed Oil Veganaise.

Scale

Ingredients

  • 3/4 cup mayonnaise
  • 1 Tablespoon green onions or chives, minced
  • 1 Tablespoon red onion, minced
  • 1 Tablespoon capers, minced
  • 1–2 small dill* pickles (roughly 1 Tablespoon), minced
  • 1 teaspoon dill pickle juice
  • 1/4 teaspoon black pepper
  • squeeze of lemon, optional

Instructions

Mix all the ingredients in a small bowl and refrigerate until ready to serve.

Notes

*It’s important to make sure your pickles are dill. Sweet pickles or relish will throw off the taste!
