Next time you're at the grocery store, pick up some store-bought pizza dough (or make homemade pizza dough) and try these easy Pizza Dough Cinnamon Rolls for a sweet treat. They are almost as good as homemade cinnamon rolls.
Whenever we do pizza nights, we always have leftover pizza dough and instead of freezing it or wasting it, we will whip up a little pizza dessert. These easy cinnamon rolls made from extra pizza dough honestly have me questioning why I make my traditional cinnamon roll recipe at all. It is such a great easy cinnamon roll recipe!
Why to love Pizza Dough Cinnamon Rolls
- You can use store bought pizza dough, leftover dough or fresh dough.
- It uses pantry ingredients.
- It only takes 30 minutes to make.
- You can serve these delicious cinnamon rolls as a dessert or for breakfast.
What's the difference between pizza dough and cinnamon roll dough?
Traditional cinnamon roll dough has a few more components to it such as milk, butter and egg to give the dough a rich, fluffy texture. Pizza dough is typically made with a bread flour, olive oil and less sugar so it has a chewier texture. While I wouldn't use pizza dough for my special Christmas morning cinnamon rolls, it's a convenient substitute for a pizza night dessert or a casual brunch.
Pizza Dough - Store-bought dough homemade pizza dough will both work for this recipe.
Brown Sugar - This can be substituted for regular sugar if needed, but the molasses in the brown sugar adds a deep rich flavor to the cinnamon filling.
Ground Cinnamon - Obviously a must for this recipe! You could get crazy and add additional spices alongside cinnamon such as pumpkin pie spice, nutmeg or all spice to these warm rolls.
Butter - Use unsalted butter at room temperature. You can not substitute the butter for oil for this recipe. I find using softened butter for the filling makes it less messy when spreading on the dough than melted butter.
Salt - It seems strange to add salt to a sweet recipe, but it brings out all the other flavors. If you need to use salted butter, I would leave out the extra salt. The reason I default to unsalted butter for recipes is so I can control how much salt is in the recipe.
Cream Cheese - This is a delicious addition to the frosting, but optional if you don't have any on hand.
Powdered Sugar - This is the main ingredient to make the sweet glaze for the top of your rolls.
Vanilla Extract - Vanilla is what gives the glaze a more interesting, complex flavor other than just pure sugar sweetness.
Preheat the oven to 375 degrees. Roll out your pre-made pizza dough into a rectangle on a lightly floured surface and mix together the filling ingredients in a small bowl (softened butter, brown sugar and cinnamon). Spread the cinnamon mixture evenly on the dough. Roll the long side of the dough into a log and cut into even 1 inch pieces using a sharp knife.
Place the rolls in an 8x8 pan and cook for 15 minutes until golden brown.
While the warm cinnamon rolls cool, whip together the cream cheese frosting. Spoon a generous amount of glaze (the best part) on top of each roll!
