We have all been there. You spend hours on a recipe and it it turns out flat, unimpressive, and bland. What’s the point? Why should I even try to cook every night? My food always turns out horrible. I am a bad cook. These are all the thoughts running through your head.
The truth is everyone can be a good cook. You just need to know some of the tricks good cooks use. Here are 5 ways to become a better cook that will help you in your cooking journey.
1.Read the Recipe Twice
I read recipes through twice before I start cooking. There are so many small things you could miss. Also, I like to plan out my equipment, and create mental plan of efficiency.
Set up your “mise en place”. This just means to have everything chopped and measured before you start cooking. Also, have all of the necessary equipment needed ready to go.
3. Follow the Recipe
Don’t use a lot of substitutions. The recipe is written a certain way because the cook has tested it. For the best results follow the recipe exactly.
4. Taste As You Go
Don’t forget to taste your recipe at each pivotal step for additional seasoning. The end result should not be a surprise. However don’t taste anything that has raw poultry or raw meat.
5. Season As You Go
Don’t just add salt at the end of the recipe. Season throughout the whole process to achieve the best flavors.
The America’s Test Kitchen Cooking School Cookbook is one of my favorite resources for learning how to cook. It has some great information for beginner cooks who want to create quality food.
